Creating a better future for ourselves

“None of us can change our yesterdays, but all of us can change our tomorrows."

- Colin Powell

The past is the past. We know this. There is nothing we can do to change the past, or have “do over” days to replace the ones we are not proud of. It happened. It’s part of our life experience, whether we want to own it or not. The best we can do is learn and grow from our past. We can uncover lessons and discover growth opportunities if we are willing to be honest with ourselves and use the lessons to help fuel our future. It's on us to create that better future, no matter what happened in the past.

We all have our blooper reels. We all have those days and moments we are not proud of. We can do our best to explain them away or forget them altogether. It still won't change what happened. However, when we decide to use those negative experiences as a catalyst for positive change, that is when our ability to create a better future for ourselves takes shape. It's how life works, whether it's our personal our professional life. Otherwise we may be doomed to keep repeating those same dark days and mistakes.

Our future is not fixed. It's determined by the choices we make today and tomorrow. It can be easy to feel like we are destined to live out our lives based on how it has gone so far, no matter what the outcome has already been. The best part is, we have the ability to make changes and choices that reshape how we plan to continue living life. It's like this "choose your own adventure" where we are the creators in the driver's seat. We get to call the shots. It's on us. Isn't that an amazing feeling? It doesn't matter how our lives have unfolded so far. The future is ours to determine. No one else can tell us otherwise.

Is there anything from your past that has prevented you from creating a better future for yourself? If so, what is it you can do to change it? How can you use those past experiences to help create that better future? It's all a matter of our perspective. We don't have to be a victim of our past. We can use it to become a victor for today and the rest of our lives. The "woe is me" pity parties don't help. We must choose to move on and make do. It's how we level up in life. It's how we become better versions of ourselves. It's on us. What plans do you have to create a better future for yourself?
