Tips & Tools

Perhaps the biggest piece of the Simple SELFCARE pie is managing our emotions and feelings. For reference, emotions are a biological and involuntary response to what we experience, while feelings represent our interpretation of our emotions. Our response to our emotions and feelings can shape a big bulk of our life, for better or worse.
Recalling any missteps from our past, we may uncover unhelpful reactions to negative emotions we felt at the time. We can unknowingly put ourselves in more challenging situations by reacting negatively to emotions like anger, frustration, or bitterness. This can lead to even more negative emotions like shame, regret, and guilt. It can end up feeling like a downward spiral.

To properly navigate our way out of negative feelings, we can learn to manage how we feel and our response to our feelings more effectively. We can even learn to transform distress into confidence and despair into hope. With an increased ability to manage our emotions and feelings, we can develop more resilience to the negative, allowing us to choose more favorable responses.
Some of the clinically reviewed resources below provide recommendations for responding to different emotions. While these resources can be helpful, they provide general information. Professional one-on-one help offers a more personalized and effective form of support. This is especially true for anyone struggling with heightened forms of anxiety, depression or other conditions that can drastically impair our ability to function.
It's helpful to explore and consider all options when engaging in the important responsibility of managing emotions and feelings. We limit our potential when we limit our opportunities for healing and growth.
It's natural to feel overwhelmed by self-help resources or limited by support from loved ones. In-person and online counseling/therapy options provide professional support from clinically trained and licensed mental health professionals. Immediate support is also available for anyone feeling hopeless and out of options.
